How We Work
Explore our frequently asked questions below to learn how we help nonprofit leaders.
What does Grant & Ledger do?
We provide nonprofit leaders with flexible capacity and additional expertise across their finance, accounting, fundraising and grant management functions. Organizations typically engage us through a monthly retainer or contracts for defined projects.
What types of nonprofits do you usually work with?
We work with growing nonprofit organizations, nonprofits navigating staff transitions, organizations managing increasingly complex funding, or leadership teams that simply need more support than their current capacity allows.
Are you replacing our accountant, bookkeeper, development staff, or other consultants?
Not necessarily. Grant & Ledger can supplement existing staff and partners, fill gaps in organizational capacity, or provide support during periods of transition. We can work alongside your bookkeeper, CPA, development team, executive leadership, board, and other partners as needed.
Do you only provide advice, or will you actually do the work?
We do both. Grant & Ledger combines strategic guidance with hands-on support. Depending on the engagement, that can mean analyzing financial information, developing fundraising materials, supporting grant reporting, building tools and processes, preparing management reports, or helping staff execute priorities.
Can you write grants for our organization?
Yes. Grant development falls within our fundraising competencies. We can support prospect strategy, proposal development, application review, grant calendars, and related work based on the priorities and capacity of the engagement.
Can you provide bookkeeping or accounting support?
Yes. Bookkeeping and accounting support fall within our staff competencies. The appropriate scope depends on your organization's existing systems, transaction volume, staffing, and the type of accounting support required.
Do you offer fractional or interim support?
Yes. Organizations experiencing a vacancy, transition, period of growth, or temporary capacity gap may contract with Grant & Ledger for fractional or interim support. These engagements are billed under a Monthly Retainer agreement.
What can we use our Monthly Retainer for?
Retainer clients can engage Grant & Ledger across our core competencies, including finance, accounting, fundraising, and grant management. Priorities are established collaboratively and may shift from month to month based on your organization's needs.
Is there a limit to what you can work on under the Monthly Retainer?
Because the retainer provides shared professional capacity rather than unlimited staffing, priorities, timelines, and workload are managed collaboratively. Large-scale projects or work requiring substantial dedicated capacity may be scoped separately.
Do you work with boards as well as staff?
Yes. Our work may include executive leadership, finance and development staff, board members, and relevant committees. We can help translate financial and fundraising information into useful information for governance and decision-making.
